Designed for the Boston Public Library

A wedding this important deserves more than flowers chosen from a package.

It deserves a floral plan created around the rooms, the photographs, and the way you want the entire wedding to feel.

The McKim Building gives you marble, murals, carved stone, vaulted ceilings, oak reading tables, historic lamps, stone arcades, dramatic staircases, and one of Boston's most recognizable courtyards.

Designs By Don Florist can design around all of it. Your flowers can be romantic and overflowing, architectural, classic, garden-inspired, modern, colorful, sculptural, or completely transformative.

The floral plan can include your bridal bouquet, wedding-party flowers, ceremony installations, aisle flowers, statement arrangements, cocktail-hour flowers, reception centerpieces, long-table florals, elevated pieces, head-table flowers, bar flowers, cake flowers, escort-display flowers, and large-scale custom installations.

The scope is built around your vision. It is not limited by a preset package or an arbitrary maximum.

Your Vision Sets the Scale

A Boston Public Library wedding can support a polished floral plan or an ambitious full-scale transformation.

The question is not, "How many flowers do we need?" It is, "What should this room feel like when guests walk in?"

Once Designs By Don Florist understands that answer, the flowers, scale, mechanics, color, and installation plan can be built around it.

One Complete Floral Story

From your bouquet to the final room reveal.

Designs By Don Florist can carry the same color story, flower varieties, movement, texture, and level of finish through every part of the wedding.

Space-Specific Floral Design

Every room creates a different opportunity.

Designs By Don Florist considers the architecture, table layout, room scale, guest sightlines, photography, and approved installation locations before the final floral direction is established.

Courtyard Ceremony Flowers

The Courtyard creates an extraordinary open-air ceremony setting surrounded by classical stone arcades and the architecture of the McKim Building.

Designs By Don Florist can create anything from elegant freestanding ceremony flowers to substantial floral structures that establish a dramatic destination for the vows.

  • Freestanding ceremony structures subject to BPL approval
  • Statement floral columns and floral urns
  • Aisle flowers and aisle-end designs
  • Large architectural arrangements
  • Wedding-party flowers tied into the ceremony palette
  • Planned floral movement into later parts of the wedding

Historic Architecture

McKim Grand Staircase

The Grand Staircase is one of the strongest architectural moments inside the McKim Building and a natural location for memorable guest arrivals and wedding photographs.

Boston Public Library currently requires event décor to remain freestanding. Designs By Don Florist can therefore develop floral presence using independent mechanics rather than attaching flowers to the historic staircase, marble, railings, walls, artwork, or fixtures.

  • Large freestanding floral arrangements
  • Statement urns
  • Architectural floral compositions
  • Floral placements designed around important photographs
  • Independent mechanics subject to venue approval

Reception Floral Design

Bates Hall

Bates Hall gives wedding floral design extraordinary visual runway with its barrel-vaulted ceiling, oak bookcases, historic reading tables, and recognizable green lamps.

Designs By Don Florist can use repetition, flower volume, height, texture, and color to create a reception design that feels intentional from one end of the room to the other.

  • Long floral runners
  • Lush low floral arrangements
  • Elevated florals where approved
  • Head-table and focal arrangements
  • Repeating floral moments throughout the room
  • Venue-approved flameless candlelight styling

The Abbey Room

Dark wood, historic murals, architectural detail, and the more intimate scale of the Abbey Room create a completely different floral environment from Bates Hall.

Designs By Don Florist can lean into the richness of the room with deep romantic color, textural garden flowers, classic white and green, sculptural arrangements, or dramatic statement pieces.

  • Lush centerpieces
  • Classic white and green florals
  • Deep romantic color palettes
  • Textural garden arrangements
  • Large focal pieces where approved
  • Custom reception floral installations

Guastavino Room

A different room can still feel unmistakably part of the same wedding.

Boston Public Library describes the Guastavino Room as a first-floor McKim Building event space with a tiled ceiling, bookcase-lined mezzanine, and large windows facing Copley Square.

Designs By Don Florist can adapt the flower scale and layout to the room while keeping the bouquet, ceremony, reception, and overall color direction visually connected.

Depending on your floor plan, the design can include elevated centerpieces, long-table flowers, statement pieces, ceremony florals, bar flowers, head-table arrangements, floral focal points, and other custom installations.

Historic Venue Logistics

The flowers are only part of the job. The installation has to work too.

A historic Boston venue requires a different level of planning from a traditional ballroom.

Designs By Don Florist considers floral mechanics, delivery, staffing, access, setup time, room transitions, breakdown, and removal before the design is finalized.

Review Current BPL Private Event Information
1

Floral décor must be freestanding

Boston Public Library currently requires event décor to remain freestanding rather than being attached to the building.

2

Setup timing is venue-controlled

Approved load-in and setup times depend on the event spaces, library hours, and final event schedule.

3

Vendor details are coordinated in advance

Floral logistics should be finalized early enough for Designs By Don Florist, your planner, catering team, and Boston Public Library to coordinate access.

4

Open flame is not permitted

Boston Public Library currently prohibits open flame. A candlelit look therefore needs venue-approved flameless alternatives.

5

Greenery containing pitch is restricted

Boston Public Library currently prohibits decorative greens containing pitch. Designs By Don Florist accounts for that when developing the foliage recipe.

6

Breakdown is part of the floral plan

Arrangements, mechanics, rentals, and installation materials need to leave according to the approved event breakdown schedule.

Boston Public Library Wedding Cost

What does a Boston Public Library wedding actually cost?

There is a major difference between the library's small one-hour ceremony program and a full private wedding using the McKim Building's main event spaces.

One-Hour Ceremony Program

$200

Current 2026 Guastavino Room Ceremony

Boston Public Library currently offers selected one-hour Guastavino Room ceremonies for $200 with up to 12 guests.

This is a separate program from a traditional private wedding. Outside vendors are limited to one officiant and one photographer, and additional decorations are not permitted under the current program.

Boston Public Library has announced that beginning in 2027, this program will increase to $300 and allow an 18-person guest count.

Important: The one-hour program is not the same event format as the full private weddings discussed throughout the rest of this page.
Check Current One-Hour Ceremony Details

Full Private Wedding

BPL publishes separate base venue fees by space.

Boston Public Library's currently linked private-event pricing guide lists the following Friday through Sunday evening base space fees.

Guastavino Room $8,000
Courtyard $8,500
Abbey Room $9,000
McKim Second Floor $18,500
Full McKim Building $26,500

These are venue base fees, not floral prices and not all-in wedding totals.

Food and beverage, rentals, planning, entertainment, photography, lighting, floral design, installation, and other event expenses are separate.

Boston Public Library Wedding Flowers

What should you budget for full-service BPL wedding flowers?

At this venue, the flowers are not simply a list of bouquets and centerpieces.

Flower volume, premium varieties, ceremony structures, reception design, custom mechanics, staffing, delivery, setup windows, room transitions, breakdown, and the number of spaces being designed all shape the final proposal.

Designs By Don Florist develops the proposal around the level of floral experience you want to create.

Luxury Full-Service Planning Range $15k-$30k+ For a full-service Boston Public Library wedding, approximately $15,000 to $30,000+ is a more realistic starting planning range for the level of design, flower volume, labor, and installation this venue can require. This is not a maximum. Large-scale floral transformations can extend well beyond this range.
01

Flower Volume

The number, scale, fullness, and density of the floral designs throughout the wedding.

02

Flower Selection

Premium varieties, specialty colors, seasonality, imported product, and overall flower availability.

03

Installation Scale

Large structures, fabrication, freestanding mechanics, installation crews, setup complexity, and breakdown.

04

Number of Spaces

Ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, entrances, bars, escort areas, stair locations, and additional floral destinations.

BPL Wedding Logistics

Guests should see the finished room, not the work required to create it.

Luxury floral design should feel effortless on wedding day, even when the logistics behind it are anything but simple.

Venue-controlled setup Boston Public Library determines the approved access and setup schedule for each event.
Weekend event timing For spaces that are available only after the library closes, current BPL guidance states weekend guest doors open at 6:30 PM or later.
Freestanding installation mechanics Floral structures need to respect the historic building and remain independent from walls, furniture, fixtures, artwork, and architectural surfaces.
The Catered Affair Boston Public Library currently identifies The Catered Affair as its in-house caterer for private events.
Breakdown and removal Designs By Don Florist can plan teardown and floral removal around the approved event schedule rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Boston Public Library Wedding FAQ

Questions couples ask before planning BPL wedding flowers.

Does Designs By Don Florist provide Boston Public Library wedding flowers?
Designs By Don Florist offers full-service wedding floral design for Boston and Greater Boston couples. Services can include bridal bouquets, wedding-party flowers, ceremony flowers, reception centerpieces, freestanding floral installations, delivery, setup, floral movement, and breakdown. All onsite work remains subject to Boston Public Library approval and current event procedures.
How much should we budget for Boston Public Library wedding flowers?
For a luxury full-service Boston Public Library wedding, Designs By Don Florist recommends using approximately $15,000 to $30,000+ as a realistic floral planning range. This is not a maximum. Weddings involving greater flower volume, multiple large installations, premium varieties, custom mechanics, multiple rooms, or extensive labor can extend well beyond this range.
What affects the cost of Boston Public Library wedding flowers?
Floral investment depends on flower volume, flower varieties, seasonality, ceremony scale, table count, number of rooms, centerpiece style, installation complexity, mechanics, delivery, setup crews, floral movement, and breakdown.
Can Designs By Don Florist create large floral installations at BPL?
Large-scale floral installations may be possible when the proposed design, mechanics, location, access, and timing comply with Boston Public Library requirements. Current BPL guidance requires event décor to remain freestanding and not be affixed to the building.
Can flowers be attached to the Boston Public Library Grand Staircase?
Current Boston Public Library guidance requires event décor to remain freestanding. Designs By Don Florist would therefore develop independent floral structures near approved staircase locations rather than attaching flowers directly to railings, marble, walls, fixtures, or historic architecture.
Can we have a floral structure in the Boston Public Library Courtyard?
A freestanding ceremony structure may be possible subject to Boston Public Library approval. Designs By Don Florist can develop the size, mechanics, floral recipe, delivery plan, and installation schedule around the approved event conditions.
Can Designs By Don Florist provide flowers for Bates Hall?
Designs By Don Florist can develop a full reception floral plan around the Bates Hall layout, including long-table flowers, lush low arrangements, elevated designs where approved, focal flowers, head-table pieces, and other floral elements appropriate for the final floor plan.
Can we use real candles with the flowers?
Boston Public Library currently prohibits open flame. Designs By Don Florist can coordinate the floral design with venue-approved flameless lighting or candle alternatives when a candlelit look is part of the wedding vision.
Can ceremony flowers be moved to the reception?
Potentially. Floral movement depends on access, timing, staffing, mechanics, room transitions, and venue approval. When a floral piece is intended for more than one location, Designs By Don Florist prefers to plan both placements before wedding day.
Does Boston Public Library require The Catered Affair?
Boston Public Library currently identifies The Catered Affair as its in-house caterer for private events.
What is the $200 Boston Public Library wedding ceremony?
Boston Public Library currently offers a separate one-hour Guastavino Room ceremony program for $200 during 2026. It is very different from a full private wedding and does not allow additional decorations or a florist as an onsite outside vendor. Boston Public Library has announced that this program will increase to $300 with an 18-person guest count beginning in 2027.
Do we need to know exactly which flowers we want before contacting Designs By Don Florist?
No. Start with the date, Boston Public Library spaces, dress, color palette, guest count, table plan, inspiration, floral priorities, and approximate budget. Designs By Don Florist can help translate those details into flower varieties, scale, mechanics, and a complete floral plan.
